The melting of the polar ice caps due to global warming is a sign that our earth is heading towards annihilation. These noticeable changes in the poles seem like a harmonious dance of melted blue sapphire lakes. Basing himself on these melting effects, he wanted his design to be pleasing to the eye and at the same time, convey a message. The design is horizontal and was installed on the loom that way with the fringes remaining on the sides. On one hand, he wanted to do something different and on the other hand he thought the transitions of the design would be clearer this way. The small bright colours used here and there are fragments of life remaining in nature, representing the end mankind brings onto itself. He has associated the subject of his design with this reality that is a problem common for all mankind. “If you tell the truth, you can reach deep into hearts”.

History

At the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Istanbul is one of the world’s oldest centres for weaving and rug trading.[1] The first edition of Istanbul Carpet Week ran from October 2016 in the Istanbul. The next edition event held in 2017 and 2018 in Istanbul.[2]
Istanbul Carpet Week is organized by the İstanbul Halı İhracatçıları Birliği (IHIB), that’s the ‘Istanbul Carpet Exporter’s Association’ in english, with Hali og Cover magazines as media partners.[3] This event is designed to showcase the products, skills and knowledge of one of the world’s oldest traditional centres of weaving.[4]
The week also includes the awards ceremony for IHIB’s National Carpet Design Contest, which promotes the work of young Turkish designers, showcases the talent of a new generation and provides an inspiring indicator of the future of carpet design.
The event includes Istanbul Rug Show, Istanbul International Carpet Conference, The National Carpet Design Contest and also a reception.[5]

Istanbul Carpet Week 6-9 October 2016

The programme kicks off with the Istanbul International Carpet Conference, which will feature local and international speakers on a wide variety of topics. Winners[9]:

  • Muhammed Türk

The Carpet ‘Destruction’ by designer Muhammad Türk took first place in the competition. He describes his design as a protest against the destruction of historical monuments by badly done restorations. He juxtaposed a central series of traditional Islamic geometrics done in a blood-hued red on a black background against a wash of blues and earth colors to represent the sweeping away of tangible evidences of the past.[10]

  • THEME: DESTRUCTION

Every day, historical monuments and natural beauties are destroyed because of badly done restoration, the fact that human needs are increasing and insufficient education. In this work, my objective is to draw attention to this destruction and state that history is so strong and visible that is is impossible to destroy it. History will always be found underground.[11]

  • Senem Kula

The carpet ‘Cycle’ by Senem Kula was took second place in the competition.[12] She interwove strips of selvedges made of jute to make a lacy piece with irregular edges. It was her bid, she said, to "bring a modern alternative and different material to traditional methods".[13]

  • THEME: CYCLE

Every artefact that shows vitality, after beingtreated by the human hand, tries to return to its previous existence… to nature. In time, it loses colour and changes shape. The project based on this idea, using totally natural jute and naturally dyed indigo, presents a human friendly 100% sustainable design with cheap raw material adding to its design value. It brings a modern alternative and different material to traditional methods.[14]
